liking
A gentle feeling of enjoying or preferring something or someone.
Liking is the feeling of enjoying something or someone, a warm sense of appreciation that's gentler than love but more than indifference. When you have a liking for strawberry ice cream, you actively prefer it and feel pleased when you get it. When you take a liking to a new classmate, you find yourself enjoying their company and wanting to spend time with them.
The word describes a positive pull toward something, though not an overwhelming passion. You might develop a liking for science fiction books, certain types of music, or solving puzzles. It's the feeling that makes you choose one thing over another, not from obligation but from genuine preference.
People also use liking to describe their fondness for other people. When someone says “She's grown quite fond of him” or “He has a real liking for his new teacher,” they mean a comfortable, positive feeling has developed. Unlike love, which can feel intense and complicated, liking is simply pleasant: you're glad that person or thing exists in your world, and you'd choose to be around them if given the option.
