limelight
The center of public attention where everyone is watching.
Limelight is the center of public attention. When someone is in the limelight, everyone is watching them and interested in what they do. A student giving a presentation to the whole school is in the limelight. A musician performing on stage is in the limelight. Political leaders live much of their lives in the limelight, with reporters following their every move.
The word comes from an old type of stage lighting used in theaters before electricity. When limestone was heated to extremely high temperatures, it glowed with an intense white light that could illuminate actors on stage. Directors aimed these “limelights” at the most important performers, making them impossible to miss.
Some people love the limelight and feel energized by attention. Others prefer to work out of the limelight, doing important things without everyone watching. A shy scientist might make a major discovery but let someone else stand in the limelight during a press conference. Some talented athletes shine brightest in the limelight, while others perform better without the pressure of constant attention.
The phrase hogging the limelight describes someone who wants all the attention for themselves, even when others deserve recognition too.
