listing
An official posted description of something for sale or rent.
A listing is an announcement that something is available, especially a house or apartment for sale or rent, or a job that’s open. A real estate listing usually includes the price, photos, number of bedrooms, and details like “walkable neighborhood” or “new roof.” An employment listing does the same kind of thing for a job: it tells you the title, pay range, responsibilities, required skills, and how to apply. In both cases, a listing is basically an official description meant to attract the right buyer, renter, or applicant.
As a verb, the word listing can also mean leaning or tilting to one side, most often used for boats or ships. If a ship takes on water through a hole in its hull, it might start listing to port (left) or starboard (right). A small sailboat can list a little when the wind catches its sails (that can be normal). But a severe list is dangerous, because it can mean the vessel might capsize.
As a verb, listing can also mean the act of reciting a list. Your little brother might be listing his favorite foods if you’ve asked him what he wants to eat.
