lockjaw
A serious illness that makes your jaw muscles lock shut.
Lockjaw is a dangerous condition where the muscles in your jaw become so tight and rigid that you can't open your mouth. It happens when a specific type of bacteria gets into your body through a cut or wound.
The bacteria that causes lockjaw lives in soil, dust, and animal waste. If you step on a rusty nail or get a deep cut that gets dirty, these bacteria can enter your body and release toxins that attack your nervous system. The toxins make your muscles contract and stay contracted, which is why your jaw can literally lock shut. The condition can spread to other muscles in your body, making it hard to swallow or breathe.
Before vaccines existed, lockjaw was a serious threat, especially on farms where people worked around soil and animals. Today, doctors give tetanus shots that protect you from the bacteria. You probably got your first tetanus vaccine as a baby, and doctors recommend getting a booster shot every ten years.
If you ever get a deep or dirty cut, especially from something metal or contaminated with soil, it's important to clean it thoroughly and tell an adult. They might take you to a doctor to make sure you're protected. The name lockjaw is often used to describe the main symptom, but the condition itself affects much more than just your jaw.
