logo
A simple picture or design that stands for a brand.
A logo is a symbol or design that represents a company, organization, team, or brand. Think of the golden arches of McDonald's, the swoosh of Nike, or the bitten apple of Apple. Each of these simple images instantly tells you which company you're looking at, even without any words.
Logos work like visual shortcuts for our brains. A good logo is easy to recognize and remember, which is why companies spend so much time designing them. Some logos use pictures or symbols, like Twitter's bird. Others use special lettering of the company's name, called a logotype. Many combine both approaches.
Today, logos appear everywhere: on products, websites, storefronts, and uniforms. Sports teams have logos on their jerseys. Schools often have logos too, combining symbols like mascots with the school's initials.
Creating an effective logo requires thinking carefully about colors, shapes, and what feelings or ideas you want people to associate with your brand. A toy company might choose bright, playful colors and rounded shapes, while a law firm might pick something more serious and traditional. The best logos are simple enough to draw from memory but distinctive enough that you'd never confuse them with anything else.
