lonely
Feeling sad and alone, wishing you had more company.
Lonely is the sad, empty feeling you get when you're alone and wish you weren't, or when you're surrounded by people but still feel disconnected from them. It's different from just being alone: you can spend a quiet afternoon reading by yourself and feel perfectly content, but loneliness is that ache of wanting companionship or connection you don't have.
You might feel lonely when you move to a new school and don't know anyone yet, watching other kids laugh together at lunch while you sit by yourself. Or you could feel lonely in a crowded room if nobody seems interested in talking with you or understanding what you're thinking about. Sometimes loneliness comes from missing a specific person, like a best friend who moved away or a grandparent who lives far away.
The feeling can show up during big changes: starting at a new school, when your friends are all busy with different activities, or when you're going through something difficult and feel like nobody understands. Even popular, outgoing people can feel lonely if their friendships feel shallow or fake.
Loneliness can fade when you make genuine connections with others, but that takes time. Reaching out to someone new, joining a club that interests you, or opening up to someone you trust can help bridge that gap between isolation and belonging.
