loner
A person who usually prefers to be alone.
A loner is someone who prefers spending time alone rather than with groups of people. A loner might eat lunch by themselves, choose to work on solo projects instead of group assignments, or spend recess reading under a tree while others play team games.
Being a loner isn't the same as being lonely. Lonely people wish they had more company, but loners genuinely enjoy their own company. Some people are natural loners who feel most energized and content when they have time to themselves. They might have a few close friends but prefer one-on-one conversations to big parties.
Famous loners include inventors, writers, and scientists who needed quiet time to think deeply about their work. Isaac Newton was known as a loner who made his greatest discoveries while working alone. Many artists and musicians do their best creative work in solitude.
Sometimes people use “loner” negatively, as if there's something wrong with preferring your own company. But there's nothing wrong with being a loner. Different people recharge in different ways: some gain energy from crowds, while others need quiet time alone. The key is understanding yourself and respecting that others might be different from you, whether they're loners or social butterflies.
