lottery
A game where people buy tickets hoping to win money.
A lottery is a game of chance where people buy numbered tickets hoping to win a prize, usually money. Players purchase tickets with specific numbers, and then someone draws winning numbers at random. If your numbers match, you win. The prizes can range from small amounts to enormous sums: some lottery jackpots reach hundreds of millions of dollars.
Lotteries work because many people pay small amounts (perhaps a dollar or two per ticket), and all that money pools together to create large prizes for the few winners. The odds of winning a big lottery are extremely small.
Governments often run lotteries to raise money for public projects like schools or parks. Throughout history, lotteries have funded everything from universities to bridges. However, the phrase “winning the lottery” has become a way to describe any incredibly lucky, unexpected event. If you find a twenty-dollar bill on the sidewalk, your friend might joke that you “won the lottery today.”
