Lubrication means making surfaces slippery so they can slide past each other smoothly without grinding or sticking. When you oil a squeaky door hinge, you're lubricating it. The oil creates a thin layer between the metal parts so they glide instead of scraping.
Without lubrication, moving parts create friction, which causes heat, wear, and damage. Think about rubbing your hands together quickly: they get hot and uncomfortable. A lubricant (like oil, grease, or even water) acts as a buffer between surfaces, letting them move freely. Car engines need motor oil to lubricate their thousands of moving parts. A bicycle chain works better when you lubricate it. Even your joints have natural lubrication called synovial fluid that helps your bones move smoothly.
People use many different lubricants depending on the job: mechanics use thick grease for heavy machinery, graphite powder for locks, and specialized oils for precision instruments. Without lubrication, most machines would overheat and break down quickly. When something moves smoothly and effortlessly, good lubrication is often the invisible reason why.
