lunchroom
A big school room where students eat lunch together.
A lunchroom is a large room in a school where students eat lunch together. Most lunchrooms have long tables with benches or chairs where dozens or even hundreds of kids sit during their lunch period. Some schools call it a cafeteria, especially if hot meals are served there.
The lunchroom serves as both a dining space and a social hub. It's where friendships develop, where you might sit with your soccer team or band friends, and where the social life of school happens outside the classroom. You might save a seat for a friend, trade snacks, or catch up on weekend plans. Some lunchrooms get loud with conversation and laughter, while others have rules about noise levels.
At the front of most lunchrooms, there's usually a lunch line where students can buy food or pick up their meals. Lunchroom staff, sometimes called cafeteria workers, prepare and serve the food, clean tables, and help keep things running smoothly. Many lunchrooms also have rules about cleaning up after yourself and treating the space respectfully, since everyone shares it.
