lunchtime
The time of day when people stop to eat lunch.
Lunchtime is the period during the day when people stop their work or activities to eat lunch, usually somewhere between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM. At school, lunchtime means the bell rings, you grab your lunch box or head to the cafeteria, and you finally get to talk with friends after sitting quietly in class all morning.
The exact timing varies: some schools have early lunch at 11 AM, while others eat closer to 1 PM. Offices might give workers an hour for lunch, while construction crews might take just thirty minutes. In some countries, lunchtime is a big deal with long breaks and substantial meals, while in others it’s quick and simple.
Lunchtime serves as a natural dividing line in the day. People often schedule meetings “before lunch” or “after lunch” because everyone understands roughly when that happens. The word can also describe duration: “a lunchtime concert” means a performance short enough to fit within a lunch break, usually under an hour.
For many kids, lunchtime represents freedom: a chance to choose where to sit, what to talk about, and how to spend those precious minutes away from desks and assignments. It’s when the social part of school happens just as much as the eating part.
