madness
Wild, crazy confusion or behavior that seems very unreasonable.
Madness is a state of severe mental confusion or irrational behavior that makes someone act in ways that don't make sense. When someone descends into madness, their thoughts become so jumbled or distorted that they can no longer think clearly or understand reality the way others do. Historically, people used this word to describe serious mental illness, though today we use more specific and compassionate terms.
The word also describes any wildly foolish or reckless behavior. When a teacher says “this is madness!” while watching students run chaotically through the hallways, she means the situation is completely out of control. If your friend decides to ride their bike down an icy hill, you might say “that's madness!” because the decision seems dangerously foolish.
Sometimes madness means intense chaos or frenzy. The final minutes of a close basketball game might be described as pure madness, with both teams desperately trying to score. March Madness is the name for the college basketball tournament, capturing the excitement and unpredictability of the games.
There's an old saying: “there's method to the madness,” meaning that something chaotic-looking actually has a hidden plan or purpose. What looks like madness from the outside might make perfect sense once you understand it.
