magic
The power or feeling that makes things seem wonderfully impossible.
Magic is the use of supernatural powers to make impossible things happen, or at least the appearance of making impossible things happen. In fantasy stories, wizards cast spells and witches brew potions using magic to transform objects, conjure fire from thin air, or make people vanish. In the real world, magicians perform tricks that look magical but rely on clever illusions, quick hands, and misdirection rather than actual supernatural powers.
The word also describes something wonderful that feels almost supernatural. You might say a snow-covered forest has a magical quality, or that your favorite book creates magic by transporting you to another world. When a basketball player makes an impossible shot, announcers might call it magic. Teachers sometimes talk about the magic of learning when a difficult concept suddenly makes perfect sense.
Magic can also mean a special quality that makes something work extraordinarily well. A great coach might have the magic touch with shy players, helping them become confident. Two musicians performing together might create magic when their styles blend perfectly.
Throughout history, people have distinguished between stage magic (entertainment), claims of real magical powers (which science has not confirmed), and that special, hard-to-explain quality that makes certain moments feel enchanted.
