mailbox
A box where mail is delivered to a person or place.
A mailbox is a container where mail carriers deliver letters, packages, and other postal items to your home or business. Most houses have a mailbox near the front door or at the end of the driveway, often mounted on a post. Apartment buildings typically have rows of small locked mailboxes in the lobby, one for each unit.
The word can also refer to the large blue collection boxes you see on street corners, where you drop off letters you want to send. When you mail something, you put it in one of these public mailboxes, and postal workers collect it for delivery.
In the digital age, the term has expanded: your email inbox works like a mailbox for electronic messages. But the original mailbox remains an important part of everyday life. Opening your mailbox and finding a handwritten letter from a friend or grandparent can feel special in a way that an email never quite matches. There's something exciting about physical mail arriving at your door, whether it's a birthday card, a package you've been waiting for, or even just an interesting catalog to flip through.
