majesty
Great and powerful beauty that inspires respect and wonder.
Majesty is the impressive dignity and grandeur that makes something or someone seem noble and awe-inspiring. When you stand before a towering mountain range or watch a massive whale breach the ocean's surface, you're witnessing something with majesty: a quality that makes you feel small in a good way, filled with wonder at its power and beauty.
The word comes from royalty. Kings and queens are addressed as “Your Majesty” because their position is meant to inspire respect and reverence. But majesty isn't limited to crowns and thrones. A giant redwood tree possesses majesty. A thunderstorm rolling across the plains has majesty. The Grand Canyon, ancient cathedrals, and soaring symphonies all share this quality of being both beautiful and overwhelming.
What makes something majestic is the combination of dignity, power, and beauty that commands your attention and respect. Scale often contributes to this feeling, though size alone doesn't create majesty. An eagle soaring high above a valley is majestic. A simple sparrow, however charming, usually doesn't create the same feeling. The word suggests something elevated, something that rises above the ordinary and makes you pause to appreciate its magnificence.
