majorette
A performer who twirls a baton while marching in parades.
A majorette is a performer who twirls a baton (a metal rod about two feet long) while marching in parades or performing at sporting events. Majorettes spin, toss, and catch their batons in time to music, often as part of a marching band's halftime show or in holiday parades. The movements require practice and coordination: majorettes might throw the baton high in the air and catch it behind their back, or spin it so fast it becomes a silver blur.
The role developed in the United States during the early 1900s and became especially popular at high school and college football games. Majorettes typically wear special uniforms with boots and often lead or perform alongside the marching band. Some majorettes perform solo routines, while others work in groups, creating synchronized patterns and formations.
