maladjusted
Struggling to fit in or handle normal social situations.
Maladjusted describes someone who struggles to fit comfortably into their environment or handle normal social situations. A maladjusted student might respond to small disappointments with huge outbursts, have trouble making friends because they don't understand social cues, or constantly clash with teachers over reasonable rules.
Think of adjusting the seat in a car: when it's properly adjusted, everything feels comfortable and works smoothly. Someone who's maladjusted is like a poorly adjusted seat: nothing quite fits right, and simple situations become uncomfortable or difficult.
A child who moves to a new country might feel temporarily maladjusted while learning the language and customs, but that's normal adjustment taking time. A maladjusted person might see threats where none exist, refuse to follow rules, or react inappropriately to everyday situations.
The opposite is being well-adjusted: able to handle life's ups and downs, get along with different kinds of people, and adapt when circumstances change.
