mandarin
A small, sweet, easy-to-peel orange-like fruit.
The word mandarin has several meanings:
- A small, sweet citrus fruit with loose, easy-to-peel skin. Mandarins are smaller than oranges and often come in those little mesh bags at the grocery store. They're perfect for lunch boxes because you can peel them with your fingers without making a mess.
- A powerful government official in imperial China. For over 2,000 years, mandarins ran the Chinese government, collecting taxes, enforcing laws, and managing provinces. These officials earned their positions by passing incredibly difficult exams that tested their knowledge of literature, philosophy, and history. Some people studied throughout their childhood just hoping to pass these tests. The mandarins wore distinctive silk robes, and their rank was shown by decorative buttons and embroidered squares on their clothing.
- Mandarin Chinese, the most widely spoken language in the world. Over a billion people speak Mandarin, making it the official language of China and Taiwan. Unlike English, Mandarin uses tones, meaning the same sound spoken at different pitches can mean completely different things.
