mantra
A word or phrase you repeat to focus or stay calm.
A mantra is a word, phrase, or sound that someone repeats over and over, either out loud or silently in their mind. People repeat mantras to help them focus, calm their thoughts, or remind themselves of something important.
Today, the word has a broader meaning. A mantra can be any phrase you repeat to yourself to stay motivated or centered. A nervous student might repeat the mantra “I can do this” before a big presentation. An athlete might use “strong and steady” as their mantra during a difficult race. A mantra works like an anchor for your mind: when thoughts start spinning in too many directions, repeating your mantra brings you back to what matters.
People also use the word more casually to describe any idea they believe in strongly and say frequently. If your coach constantly says “Practice makes progress,” you might joke that it's become their mantra. The key element is repetition: whether sacred or personal, a mantra is something you return to again and again, like a familiar path through the woods that becomes clearer each time you walk it.
