mark
A visible spot or line on something’s surface.
The word mark has several meanings:
- A visible spot, line, or stain on something. A pencil mark on paper, a scuff mark on a floor, or a dirt mark on your shirt are all signs that something touched or changed the surface. Teachers put check marks next to correct answers and red marks on mistakes. Some marks are temporary (like chalk marks on a sidewalk), while others are permanent (like carved marks in stone).
- A grade or score that shows how well someone performed. British students receive marks on their schoolwork the way American students receive grades. Getting high marks means doing excellent work, while poor marks suggest struggling with the material.
- A target or goal you're trying to reach. Archers aim for the mark when shooting arrows. Missing the mark means failing to achieve what you intended. When someone says your guess was “wide of the mark,” they mean you were far from correct. Being on the mark means being exactly right.
- Verb: to leave a visible sign or symbol on something. You might mark your place in a book with a bookmark, or mark important dates on a calendar. Scientists mark animals with tags to track their movements. A marker is a pen designed specifically for making clear, visible marks.
The phrase “make your mark” means to do something memorable or important that people will remember you by.
