marten
A small, tree-climbing mammal with soft, valuable brown fur.
A marten is a small, sleek mammal related to weasels and otters, known for its beautiful fur and excellent climbing abilities. Martens live in forests across northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia, where they hunt squirrels, birds, and rabbits through the trees with remarkable agility. They're about the size of a house cat but much longer and leaner, with a bushy tail and soft, luxurious fur that ranges from golden brown to dark chocolate.
For centuries, marten pelts were highly prized for making coats and hats, which led to them being heavily hunted. In fact, the Hudson's Bay Company, which dominated the fur trade in Canada for over 200 years, considered marten fur one of its most valuable commodities. Today, marten populations have recovered in many areas thanks to conservation efforts and regulated hunting.
Despite their name, martens aren't closely related to the bird called a martin (a type of swallow). If you're lucky enough to spot a marten in the wild, you'll likely see it disappearing up a tree trunk in a flash, since these curious, energetic animals prefer to stay high in the branches where they feel safest.
