martial art
A sport or practice that teaches fighting and self-defense skills.
A martial art is a structured system of combat and self-defense techniques, often developed over centuries within a particular culture. Martial arts teach students specific ways to punch, kick, block, throw, or grapple with opponents, along with the discipline and focus needed to master these skills.
Different martial arts come from different parts of the world and emphasize different approaches. Karate, from Japan, focuses on powerful strikes and blocks. Judo, also Japanese, specializes in throws and grappling. Taekwondo, from Korea, is famous for its spectacular high kicks. Kung fu encompasses hundreds of Chinese fighting styles, some imitating animal movements like the praying mantis or crane.
While martial arts teach fighting techniques, most schools emphasize much more than combat. Students learn respect, self-control, and perseverance. They practice forms called kata or poomsae: carefully choreographed sequences of movements that develop precision, balance, and muscle memory. They bow to their instructors and training partners, showing respect even in competition.
Many people study martial arts without ever planning to fight anyone. They enjoy the physical challenge, the mental discipline, and the sense of accomplishment as they advance through colored belts toward the goal of a black belt. A martial artist trains their body, mind, and character together, learning that real strength includes knowing when not to fight.
