matte
Not shiny; a surface that looks flat and dull.
Matte describes a surface that doesn't shine or reflect light. A matte finish looks flat and dull rather than glossy or sparkly. When you print a photograph on matte paper, it has a soft, non-reflective surface, unlike the shiny finish of glossy photo paper. Matte paint on walls absorbs light instead of bouncing it back, which is why rooms painted with matte paint can feel calmer and softer than rooms with shiny paint.
Artists and designers choose matte finishes for different effects. A matte screen protector on a tablet reduces glare, making it easier to see in bright light. Matte lipstick gives a velvety look instead of a wet shine. Even cars can have matte paint jobs, though they're much harder to keep clean than regular glossy paint.
The opposite of matte is glossy or shiny. Think of the difference between a smooth river stone (glossy) and a piece of unglazed pottery (matte). Both can be beautiful, but they interact with light in completely different ways. When something is matte, light hits it and gets scattered instead of bouncing straight back to your eyes.
