maturity
The quality of acting responsible and handling feelings thoughtfully.
Maturity is the quality of thinking and acting in a thoughtful, responsible way rather than being impulsive or childish. A mature person considers consequences before acting, handles disappointment without throwing a tantrum, and takes responsibility for their mistakes instead of making excuses.
Maturity shows up in different ways. When your younger sibling breaks your favorite toy and you feel angry but choose to speak calmly instead of yelling, that's maturity. When you admit you forgot to finish your homework instead of blaming your dog or the Wi-Fi, that's maturity too. A mature student might choose to finish their project before playing video games, even when no one is watching.
Maturity doesn't mean being perfect or never feeling strong emotions. It means managing those emotions and thinking beyond just what you want right now. Someone can be mature in some ways but still growing in others. You might be mature enough to save your allowance for something important but still learning to stay calm when you lose a game.
The word also describes physical development. When fruit reaches maturity, it's fully grown and ripe. Scientists talk about animals reaching maturity when they're fully developed adults.
Maturity develops gradually over time through experience and practice.
