maybe
Possibly, but not for sure; between yes and no.
Maybe is a word we use when we're uncertain about something or when the answer depends on circumstances that haven't been decided yet. If your friend asks whether you can come over on Saturday and you say “maybe,” you're telling them it's possible but not certain: perhaps you have chores to finish first, or your family might have other plans.
The word sits right between yes and no. When a teacher asks if you studied for the test and you answer “maybe,” you're admitting you did some studying but aren't sure if it was enough. When your parents say “maybe” about getting a dog, they're considering it without making a promise.
Sometimes people use maybe to soften bad news or avoid committing to something they don't want to do. If someone keeps answering “maybe” when you invite them somewhere, they might actually mean “probably not” but don't want to hurt your feelings. Other times, maybe honestly reflects genuine uncertainty: “Maybe it will rain tomorrow” means the weather could go either way, and nobody knows for sure yet.
