meaningless
Having no real purpose, importance, or clear message.
Meaningless describes something that has no meaning, purpose, or significance. A meaningless gesture is one that looks impressive but accomplishes nothing real. A meaningless conversation might involve lots of words without saying anything important.
When math homework feels meaningless, you can't see how it connects to anything that matters to you. When a rule seems meaningless, you can't understand the reason behind it. Sometimes people describe their day as meaningless when they feel like nothing they did made a difference.
The word often carries a sad or frustrated feeling. A trophy becomes meaningless if everyone gets one regardless of effort. A promise becomes meaningless if the person never keeps their word. Numbers can be meaningless without context: knowing that 47 people did something tells you nothing unless you know whether that's out of 50 people or 5,000.
The opposite of meaningless is meaningful, something rich with purpose and significance. A meaningful conversation leaves both people feeling understood. Meaningful work connects to something larger than itself. When you find meaning in what you do, even small actions matter.
