mechanical
Related to machines or done in an automatic, unfeeling way.
Mechanical describes things that involve machines or physical movements, or actions done automatically without much thought.
When something is mechanical, it often involves parts that move, push, pull, or turn. A mechanical pencil uses a small mechanism to push lead out when you click the top. A mechanical clock runs on gears and springs rather than electronics. Mechanical engineering is the field where people design machines, engines, and moving systems.
The word also describes actions that have become so routine they happen almost automatically, without real feeling or thought behind them. When you give a mechanical wave goodbye while thinking about something else, your hand moves but your mind isn't really engaged. If someone reads aloud in a mechanical way, they're pronouncing the words correctly but without expression or emotion, like a robot.
This second meaning isn't always negative. Sometimes mechanical precision is exactly what you need: a pianist practicing scales performs them mechanically to build muscle memory, so later she can play with feeling. But when connection matters, like comforting a friend or enjoying a story, being too mechanical can mean missing the human element that makes the moment meaningful.
