megaphone
A cone-shaped tool that makes your voice much louder.
A megaphone is a cone-shaped device that amplifies your voice, making it much louder so people far away can hear you clearly. Picture a cheerleader at a football game: by speaking into the narrow end of the megaphone, their voice projects powerfully across the entire field, reaching fans in the top rows of the bleachers who would never hear a normal shout.
The simplest megaphones are just hollow cones made of plastic or cardboard. They work by channeling sound waves in one direction instead of letting them scatter in all directions. Before electronic amplifiers existed, people used megaphones at protests, rallies, and sporting events. Ship captains used them to shout orders across the deck during storms. Even today, coaches, referees, and lifeguards use megaphones when they need to be heard over crowd noise or across long distances.
You might also hear about a bullhorn, which is an electronic megaphone with a battery-powered amplifier inside, making voices even louder. When someone has a large audience or platform to share their views, we sometimes say they have a megaphone to describe their ability to broadcast their message widely.
