merry-go-round
A spinning ride with animal seats that children sit on.
A merry-go-round is a rotating circular platform with seats, usually shaped like horses or other animals, that children ride for fun. You'll find merry-go-rounds at carnivals, amusement parks, and playgrounds. The platform spins around a central pole while cheerful music plays, and riders try to grab a brass ring as they pass by. The horses often move up and down as the ride turns, creating the feeling of galloping even though you're going in circles.
These rides have delighted children for over 400 years. Some antique merry-go-rounds feature beautifully carved and painted wooden horses that are now considered works of art.
People also use merry-go-round to describe any situation that keeps repeating without getting anywhere, like when two friends have the same argument over and over. If someone says “I feel like I'm on a merry-go-round,” they mean they're stuck in a cycle that just keeps spinning without making real progress. Unlike the playground version, this kind of merry-go-round usually isn't much fun.
