mesmerize
To hold someone’s full attention like they are in a trance.
To mesmerize means to capture someone's complete attention, as if putting them in a trance. When you're mesmerized by something, you can't look away or think about anything else. A magician might mesmerize an audience with an incredible illusion. A beautiful sunset might mesmerize you, holding your gaze as the colors shift across the sky.
When something mesmerizes you, time seems to stop. You might be mesmerized watching flames dance in a campfire, or mesmerized by a skilled musician's performance. Students sometimes become mesmerized by a really engaging teacher who makes history or science come alive.
Being mesmerized is more intense than just being interested. It's that feeling when you're so focused on something that someone has to call your name twice to get your attention. A mesmerizing story or performance can hold people spellbound from beginning to end.
