Metamorphosis is a dramatic transformation where something changes completely from one form into another. It perfectly describes what happens when a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly or when a tadpole becomes a frog.

In biology, metamorphosis refers to the life cycle stages of certain animals. A butterfly's metamorphosis has four stages: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), and adult butterfly. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar's entire body breaks down and reforms into something completely different. The crawling, leaf-eating caterpillar becomes a flying, nectar-drinking butterfly. That's metamorphosis: a total transformation where one form becomes another entirely.

People also use the word more broadly to describe dramatic changes in other contexts. A struggling company might undergo a metamorphosis and become highly successful. A shy student might experience a personal metamorphosis over summer break and return to school confident and outgoing. When we say something has metamorphosed, we mean it has changed so completely that it seems like a different thing entirely.

The key to metamorphosis is that the change is profound and complete, not just a small improvement or adjustment. It's the difference between a caterpillar growing a bit longer (ordinary change) and becoming a butterfly (metamorphosis).
