mic
A device that picks up sound so it can be heard louder.
Mic is short for microphone, a device that captures sound and converts it into an electrical signal that can be amplified, recorded, or broadcast. When a singer performs on stage, they hold a mic close to their mouth so their voice can be heard throughout the entire venue. Teachers sometimes wear small mics clipped to their shirts so students in the back of large classrooms can hear clearly.
The word appears in common phrases too. To drop the mic means to make such a powerful statement or performance that nothing more needs to be said, like walking away after delivering the perfect comeback. When someone says mic drop, they're declaring victory in an argument or celebrating an impressive achievement. And when performers do a mic check before a show, they're testing to make sure the equipment works properly, often by saying “Testing, one, two, three” into the microphone.
