midpoint
The exact middle point between two places or times.
A midpoint is the exact middle of something. If you draw a line between two points, the midpoint is the spot precisely halfway between them. On a number line from 0 to 10, the midpoint is 5. If your school is three miles from home, the midpoint of your trip is at the mile-and-a-half mark.
The word works for time as well as distance. The midpoint of a soccer game comes at halftime, when exactly half the playing time has passed. If your vacation lasts eight days, the midpoint falls at the end of day four.
In geometry class, finding midpoints helps you divide shapes evenly and locate the centers of circles and other figures. Architects use midpoints to ensure buildings are balanced and symmetrical. Mapmakers calculate midpoints to find the center between two cities.
The concept matters beyond math and measurement. When two friends disagree about where to meet, they might choose a midpoint between their houses so neither person travels farther than the other. When you're reading a long book, reaching the midpoint gives you a sense of progress: you're exactly halfway to finishing.
