mill
A building or machine that grinds things into smaller pieces.
The word mill has several meanings:
- A building or machine that grinds something into powder or smaller pieces. A flour mill grinds wheat into flour by crushing the grains between heavy stones or metal rollers. A pepper mill grinds peppercorns at your dinner table. A lumber mill (also called a sawmill) cuts logs into boards. For centuries, mills used water wheels or windmills to power their grinding stones, and you can still see old stone mills next to rivers in many towns.
- To move around in a confused, aimless way, like a crowd. When students mill around in the hallway before class, they're wandering without clear direction, talking in groups, not really going anywhere. Cattle might mill about in a pen, circling and mixing together.
- A factory or plant where something is manufactured. A steel mill produces steel from iron ore. A paper mill turns wood pulp into paper. Cotton mills were among the first factories during the Industrial Revolution, weaving thread into cloth with massive mechanical looms.
People have been building mills for thousands of years, making them one of humanity's most important inventions for processing food and materials.
