million
The number 1,000,000, a thousand thousands.
A million is the number 1,000,000: a one followed by six zeros. To understand how large this is, imagine counting to a million out loud, one number per second, without stopping. It would take you about eleven and a half days of nonstop counting!
Millionaires are people whose wealth totals at least a million dollars. A million dollars sounds like an enormous fortune, and it is substantial, but it's far less rare than you might think. In the United States, there are many millionaires.
When people talk about millions of something, they often mean a huge but imprecise number: “There are millions of stars in the sky” doesn't mean exactly 1,000,000 stars, just an enormous quantity. A one-in-a-million chance describes something extremely unlikely but not impossible. And when someone says you look like “a million bucks,” they mean you look absolutely fantastic.
As an adjective, million can describe an amount: a million-dollar idea, a million-mile journey, or a million-watt smile.
