ministry
A government department that manages one main area of responsibility.
Ministry has two main meanings that both involve service and responsibility:
- A department of a national government responsible for a specific area. In many countries, the Ministry of Education manages schools and sets educational policies, while the Ministry of Health oversees hospitals and public health programs. Think of ministries as the major divisions of a country's government, each focused on an important area like defense, agriculture, or transportation. The United States uses the word department instead (like the Department of Education), but the idea is the same: a large organization handling one crucial aspect of running the country. The person who leads a ministry is called a minister.
- The work and duties of religious leaders, especially Christian clergy. When someone enters the ministry, they dedicate their life to serving their faith community through teaching, counseling, and leading worship services. A pastor's ministry might include visiting sick congregation members, preparing sermons, and helping people through difficult times. Many churches also talk about ministries (plural) to describe specific service programs, like a youth ministry that works with teenagers or a music ministry that organizes choirs and worship music.
