misfit
A person who does not fit in with others.
A misfit is someone who doesn't quite fit in with the people or situation around them. When applied to people, it means someone whose personality, interests, or way of doing things doesn't match what's expected in their group or environment.
A student who loves reading ancient Greek myths might feel like a misfit in a class where everyone else only wants to talk about video games. An artist who works slowly and carefully might be a misfit in a fast-paced advertising agency. Being a misfit doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It can also mean you're in the wrong place or haven't found your people yet.
History is full of misfits who changed the world precisely because they didn't fit the mold. Thomas Edison was considered a misfit in school because he asked too many questions. The Wright brothers were misfits in the scientific community because they were bicycle mechanics, not university professors, yet they figured out how to fly.
Sometimes the things that make you a misfit in one place become your greatest strengths somewhere else. People often talk about finding where they belong or creating a place where they feel they fit in.
