mixtape
A collection of songs put together for a special purpose.
A mixtape is a collection of songs recorded together, originally on cassette tapes, chosen and arranged by someone to create a specific mood or tell a story through music. In the 1980s and 1990s, teenagers would spend hours recording their favorite songs from the radio or their CD collections onto blank cassettes, carefully ordering them to express feelings, share discoveries, or make something perfect for a long car ride.
Making a mixtape was personal and thoughtful. You had to choose each song carefully, thinking about how one track would flow into the next. If you made a mixtape for a friend, it showed you cared enough to spend real time and effort creating something special just for them. The songs you picked revealed something about your taste, your feelings, or what you wanted to say but couldn't quite put into words.
Today, people rarely use actual cassette tapes, but the idea lives on. When you create a playlist on a music app, you're making a digital mixtape. Hip-hop artists also use the term differently: they release mixtapes as collections of songs, often for free, to build their audience and showcase new material. Whether on tape or in an app, a mixtape transforms individual songs into something greater: a soundtrack for a moment, a message to a friend, or a window into who you are.
