mockery
Cruel making fun of someone to embarrass or hurt them.
Mockery is the act of making fun of someone or something in a cruel or contemptuous way. When someone engages in mockery, they ridicule or imitate another person to make them look foolish or stupid, going beyond playful teasing to cause embarrassment or hurt. If a student mocks a classmate's accent or the way they pronounce a word, they're turning something personal into a target for laughter.
Mockery often involves exaggeration or mimicry. Someone might repeat another person's words in a silly voice, or imitate their gestures in an over-the-top way to get laughs at their expense. This is different from friendly joking, where everyone's in on the fun. Mockery has a mean edge to it, and the person being mocked usually feels hurt or humiliated.
The word can also describe something so badly done that it defeats its own purpose. If a trial is conducted unfairly, someone might call it a mockery of justice, meaning it pretends to be fair but actually makes a joke of what justice should be. When something becomes a mockery, it's so ridiculous or inadequate that it insults what it's supposed to be.
