molecular
About molecules, the tiny building blocks of matter.
Molecular means relating to molecules, which are the tiny building blocks that make up many things around us. A molecule forms when two or more atoms bond together: water molecules contain two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H₂O), while table salt is made of sodium and chlorine atoms bonded together.
When scientists study something at the molecular level, they're examining very small pieces of a substance to understand how it works. Molecular biology investigates how living things function by studying their molecules, like DNA and proteins. Molecular gastronomy is a cooking style that uses scientific understanding of how food molecules behave to create surprising textures and flavors.
The word helps distinguish between different scales of investigation. You might study a forest by counting trees, or you could study it at the molecular level by analyzing the chemical compounds in tree bark. Both approaches reveal something important, but molecular study zooms in much closer to understand the fundamental chemistry of how things work.
