monogram
A fancy design made from a person’s initials.
A monogram is a design made by combining someone's initials into a single decorative symbol. You might see a monogram on a towel showing “J.M.S.” for Jennifer Marie Smith, with the letters overlapping or arranged in an artistic way. The middle letter is often larger because it represents the person's last name.
People put monograms on all sorts of personal items: bathrobes, stationery, handkerchiefs, jewelry, and even luggage. A monogrammed backpack or lunchbox helps identify whose it is, but it also adds a personal, elegant touch. Before the age of printed labels and tags, monograms were especially important for marking ownership of valuable linens and clothing.
Creating a monogram requires thought about design: how the letters interlock, which fonts to use, and how to make them look balanced. Some families use the same monogram design across generations, passing down monogrammed silver or linens as heirlooms.
When you monogram something, you're adding this personalized mark to it. A monogrammed gift shows extra care because someone took time to make it specifically yours.
