mood
The way you feel at a particular time.
A mood is the way you feel at a particular time. When you wake up energized and ready for the day, you're in a good mood. When everything seems to annoy you and you'd rather be left alone, you're in a bad mood. Your mood colors how you experience the world around you.
Moods differ from emotions in their duration and intensity. Emotions like surprise or fear can flash through you in seconds, but moods linger. You might stay in a cheerful mood all morning or feel grumpy for an entire afternoon. Sometimes you can point to a reason for your mood (you're excited because it's your birthday), but other times moods arrive mysteriously, influenced by things like how well you slept, the weather, or even what you ate.
The word also describes the atmosphere or feeling of a place or piece of art. A story can have a spooky mood, a painting might create a peaceful mood, and a room lit by candles has a different mood than one with bright fluorescent lights. When someone says “I'm not in the mood for that,” they mean they don't feel like doing it right now.
People sometimes talk about moods to help them handle their feelings. Noticing when you're in a bad mood may help you avoid saying something you'll regret later. Knowing what improves your mood, whether that's playing outside, reading, or talking with a friend, can make difficult days feel a bit easier.
