move in
To start living in a new place and settle there.
To move in means to bring your belongings into a new place where you'll be living and start making it your home. When a family moves in to a new house, they carry furniture through the front door, unpack boxes in each room, and arrange everything until the space feels like theirs. College students move in to their dorm rooms at the start of each school year, hauling suitcases up stairs and decorating their walls.
Moving in involves settling into a space: hanging clothes in closets, stocking the kitchen with food, figuring out which bedroom is whose. The first night after moving in can feel strange because nothing is quite in the right place yet, but gradually the new place becomes familiar.
The phrase can also mean coming closer to someone or something. If you're watching a nature documentary and the camera moves in on a butterfly, it zooms closer to show more detail. When someone at recess moves in to join a conversation, they step closer to become part of the group.
