multipurpose
Able to be used for many different jobs or purposes.
Multipurpose means designed or able to be used for several different functions or tasks. A multipurpose room at school might serve as a cafeteria during lunch, an auditorium for assemblies, and a place for PE class on rainy days. A multipurpose tool might include a knife, scissors, screwdriver, and bottle opener all in one compact device.
Something multipurpose saves space and money because one thing does the work of several. A multipurpose cleaner works on windows, counters, and floors, so you don't need three different bottles. A multipurpose field might host soccer games, track meets, and band practice.
The opposite would be something single-purpose or specialized, like a garlic press that only crushes garlic. Multipurpose items sacrifice some specialization for versatility: a multipurpose tool's scissors might not cut as perfectly as dedicated scissors, but they're handy when you need something that does many jobs reasonably well. When planning a space or choosing tools, people decide whether they need something multipurpose and flexible or something specialized that does one job exceptionally well.
