multitask
To work on several tasks at almost the same time.
To multitask means to work on several different things at the same time, or to switch quickly between multiple tasks. When you multitask, you might be writing an essay while also checking your messages and listening to music, all within the same few minutes.
Here's the tricky part: what feels like multitasking is usually task switching. Your brain rapidly shifts attention from one thing to another rather than truly doing them all at once. Some simple combinations work fine: you can walk while talking, or fold laundry while listening to a podcast. But when tasks require serious concentration, like solving math problems while texting a friend, switching back and forth makes both tasks take longer and leads to more mistakes.
Some activities genuinely work well together: a chef might dice vegetables while keeping an eye on a simmering pot. But trying to read a complex chapter while watching a show usually means doing both poorly. Understanding when multitasking helps and when it hurts is a useful skill as schoolwork and life get more complicated.
