music
Organized sounds made to express feelings or ideas.
Music is organized sound created to express ideas, emotions, or beauty. When someone plays a piano, strums a guitar, or sings a song, they're making music by arranging notes, rhythms, and melodies in ways that move us or make us want to move.
Music exists in every human culture and has for thousands of years. Ancient peoples made music with drums, flutes carved from bone, and their own voices. Today, we create music with traditional instruments like violins and trumpets, electronic keyboards and synthesizers, and even computers. Some music makes you want to dance, some makes you feel peaceful, and some tells stories without using any words at all.
Different styles of music, called genres, have developed around the world: classical music with orchestras, jazz with improvisation, rock with electric guitars, hip-hop with rhythmic spoken words, country music with storytelling, and countless others. Each genre has its own character and history.
Musicians study their craft for years, learning how to read musical notation (a special written language for music), master their instruments, and understand how different sounds work together. But you don't need formal training to enjoy music or recognize when a melody sticks in your head or a rhythm makes your foot tap. Music connects people across languages and cultures in ways few other things can.
