mustelid
A small, fierce meat-eating mammal like a weasel or otter.
A mustelid is any member of the weasel family, a group of meat-eating mammals known for being fierce hunters despite their small size. This family includes weasels, otters, badgers, wolverines, minks, and ferrets. Skunks used to be grouped with mustelids, but scientists have now placed them in their own family.
What makes mustelids special is their long, flexible bodies and incredible hunting skills. Most have short legs, sharp teeth, and lightning-fast reflexes. A weasel can chase a mouse through tunnels too narrow for other predators. A wolverine, though only the size of a medium dog, can sometimes drive a bear away from food. Otters use their sleek bodies to catch fish underwater with astonishing speed and grace.
Many mustelids also have scent glands that produce strong odors for marking territory or defending themselves. Some use powerful sprays, while others use scent in subtler ways.
Despite their small size, mustelids punch well above their weight class in the animal kingdom. They're found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica, thriving in forests, rivers, mountains, and grasslands. Their success comes from being tough, adaptable, and remarkably good at what they do: hunting and surviving in challenging environments.
