neat
Tidy and well-organized, without any mess.
Neat describes something arranged in an orderly, tidy way, without clutter or mess. When your desk is neat, your books are stacked, your pencils are in their holder, and there's no crumpled paper scattered around. A neat bedroom has clothes put away and toys organized, not strewn across the floor.
The word also describes someone who naturally keeps things organized. A neat person might alphabetize their bookshelf or fold their shirts the same way every time. Some people are naturally neat, while others have to work at it.
Neat can also mean clever or excellent, especially when you discover something interesting. If you learn that octopuses have three hearts, you might say “That's neat!” or “Neat!” In this sense, it's a way of expressing genuine appreciation or fascination.
When describing handwriting, neat means clear and carefully formed, easy to read because the letters are well-shaped and evenly spaced. Teachers often praise neat handwriting because it shows care and makes communication clearer.
The opposite of neat is messy or sloppy. While being neat isn't the only way to be successful, it can make life easier: you can find what you need, your work looks more polished, and you spend less time searching for lost items.
