necessary
Needed and cannot be avoided or done without.
Necessary means required or essential for something to happen or exist. When something is necessary, you can't do without it. Food and water are necessary for survival. If your teacher says a pencil is necessary for the test, you need to bring one or you won't be able to complete it.
Think about building a treehouse: wood is necessary (you can't build without it), but paint is optional (nice to have, but not required). When a doctor says rest is necessary for recovery, she means you must rest to get better, not that rest might help a little.
When something is truly necessary, there's no way around it. You might not want to study for a big exam, but if passing is necessary to move to the next grade, you don't have a choice.
People sometimes confuse necessary with merely helpful or convenient. Your phone might feel necessary, but it's not required for survival the way food and water are. Learning to distinguish what's truly necessary from what's just useful helps you prioritize and make better decisions about how to spend your time and energy.
