needy
Needing a lot of attention, help, or basic things.
Needy describes someone who constantly requires attention, reassurance, or help from others, often more than seems reasonable. A needy friend might text you ten times in an hour when you don't respond immediately, or get upset if you want to play with someone else at recess. A needy person struggles to feel secure without constant support from others.
The word can also simply mean lacking basic necessities. A needy family might not have enough money for food or warm clothing. Charities often help “the needy,” meaning people who need assistance with essentials like shelter, meals, or medical care.
When describing personality, needy usually carries a negative tone. It suggests someone depends too heavily on others for emotional support or validation. A needy student might constantly ask the teacher “Is this good enough?” even after receiving clear praise. This differs from occasionally needing help, which everyone experiences. The neediness can feel endless, like a hole that never gets filled no matter how much attention or reassurance someone receives.
People can become needy when they feel insecure or anxious. Understanding this can help us be patient with needy behavior, though it's also healthy to maintain boundaries about how much support we can reasonably provide.
